Lasers - The New Cutting Edge
Over the last 20 years, laser have become part of the standard
armamentarium for many types of medical and dental treatments.
Lasers have the advantage of localizing a treatment area and
thereby minimizing discomfort and reducing healing time. An
article in the May 2005 issue of the Academy of General Dentistry
(AGD) AGD Impact, reiterates that common dental applications
include tooth whitening, ulcer removal and periodontal therapy.
Lasers can also replace the drill to remove decay and facilitate
cavity preparation and they can be used in place of a needle
to administer anesthesia. Patients are encouraged to ask their
dentist if they have had training in the use of lasers since
there are not state laws requiring dentists to do so. "The
Academy of Laser Dentistry says dentists should have completed
at least a Standard Proficiency level of competency according
to the Curriculum Guidelines and Standards for Dental Laser
Education."
